Hartpury to award its own degrees
University Centre Hartpury is delighted to announce that it has been granted Taught Degree Awarding Powers by Her Majesty’s Privy Council – a major step towards achieving its vision of creating Hartpury College and Hartpury University, two outstanding specialist institutions side-by-side on one campus.
Taught Degree Awarding Powers (TDAP) mean that from September 2018, new students will be able to study for a taught Honours or Masters degree awarded by University Centre Hartpury.
Russell Marchant, Principal, University Centre Hartpury and Hartpury College, said: “We are proud to be of the first specialist providers of education that’s recognised for its quality in this way. Gaining Taught Degree Awarding Powers publicly stamps the integrity of what we do. It’s an exciting step. We’ve worked hard to get this status and it is credit to all of our staff that we have achieved it.
“The ability to validate our own degrees means we can respond quickly to market and student demands” explained Rosie Scott-Ward, Director of Higher Education and Vice Principal, University Centre Hartpury. “As a vocational provider with strong industry partnerships, this is paramount to forging clear progression routes through academic levels and to our students moving into strong careers when they graduate”.
The change comes following a period of consultation with current staff and students. Janine Fox, Hartpury Students’ Union Manager, said: “Hartpury Students' Union are delighted with the achievement of taught degree awarding powers. As a union we proudly represent all of our members and as such we were part of the process at every level, with students being consulted throughout. With the Hartpury name recognised globally as a first choice specialist provider we welcome the further acknowledgement that this status brings”.
The awarding of Taught Degree Powers is timely; The past month has also seen University Centre Hartpury achieve Gold in the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF, 2017), placing it amongst the top 20% of UK higher education providers for the quality of its teaching and the only education provider in Gloucestershire to hold a Gold TEF award. Latest figures also reveal that 98.6% of graduates have entered employment and or further study within 6 months of completing their studies at Hartpury.
Hartpury currently delivers honours and postgraduate degrees in sport, equine, animal and agriculture to over 1550 students and has been teaching degrees from its Gloucestershire campus since 1992.
University Centre Hartpury will continue going from strength-to-strength, alongside Hartpury College. The College offers further education qualifications including A levels and BTEC diplomas and is the best Specialist Land-based College in England for student achievement, as highlighted in a recent Government report.
