Moreton Morrell College is marking five years of delivering a leading equestrian qualification as part of its equine degrees – with a former student driving its delivery.

Former student and now tutor Hannah Fenech has been the driving force behind the delivery of the 1st4Sport Equestrian Coaching Qualification at Level 1 and 2 since 2019, with

Moreton Morrell College the only university centre to offer this qualification outside of any British Equestrian Member Body.

Prospective students will be able to discover equine degrees, the 1st4Sport qualification and get more information in an open day for degree-level courses at Moreton Morrell College on Saturday, October 12.

Moreton Morrell College is part of WCG (Warwickshire College Group) and its degrees are delivered through the group’s Higher Education arm, Warwickshire College and University Centre (WCUC).

Hannah’s story at the college can be traced back to 1992 when she started studying BA (Hons) in Equine Studies at Moreton Morrell. At the time it was one of the very few equine degrees in existence.

Fast forward three decades and Hannah is now sharing her experiences and knowledge with the next generation.

Back in the summer between her first and second year as a student at Moreton Morrell, Hannah worked for a Danish international Grand Prix dressage rider and her partner an Advanced Eventer. She became an integral part of their Trakehner and Hanoverian Stud, organising the Grading and Show for the Trakehners Breeding Fraternity.

Her degree included an industrial placement year and Hannah ran her own company marketing and selling security alarms for the Equestrian Industry and co-ordinated an awareness campaign from British Eventing (then British Horse Trials Association). During this time Hannah obtained her BHA AI Qualification, before passing her BHSII Qualification post-university and becoming a coach / trainer for a horse and rider combination qualifying for Blenheim Palace Horse Trial in the 3* FEI three-day event.

This sparked a career freelancing in the equestrian industry, including grooming and riding for an Olympic Event Rider, bringing an RAF saddle club from brink of closure to be thriving and profit making, coaching and assessing various Pony Clubs and running a successful tack shop.

Her career then took her to one of the top centres for training for BHS exams, before setting up a Livery and Training Yard with her parents in 2003. The training and livery yard is still thriving to this day.

After completing a string of qualifications, including becoming a NVQ assessor, obtaining a BHS I qualification (now known as a BHS Stage 5 Performance Coach in Complete Horsemanship)and becoming BHS British Eventing Accredited Coach, Hannah became re-involved with Moreton Morrell as the training and livery yard began using the college as its apprenticeship provider.

Hannah’s involved with the college group and soon she became a lecturer in Further Education courses and then Higher Education Equine courses in 2016, bringing her journey full circle.

Three years later she was central to the college running the 1st4Sport Equestrian Coaching Qualification for the first time.

Hannah still runs the training and livery yard with her mother. Working closely with Veterinary Practitioners, Physiotherapists, Rehabilitating several horses after injuries. The yard has had a series of successful apprentices and a track record of developing young people.

She also has for several years been the on-site coach for the British Riding Clubs National Eventing Championships. She is also a BHS Assessor and Ride Safe Trainer.

With being a BHS assessor and her industry connections, she understands what qualities and skills a graduate need in order to be successful in the equestrian industry.

She shares that experience and knowledge with students on Equine degree courses at Moreton Morrell College / Warwickshire College and University Centre.
