Tom Horn, a final year higher education student studying for a degree in Equine Therapy and Rehabilitation at Moreton Morrell College has received a student nominated award at a recent Inter-college dissertation challenge at Derby College.

With twenty one delegates attending from WCUC, the estimated total number of student and tutor delegates on the day was a hundred and eighty, all representing colleges and universities from around the region.

Four industry judges in attendance were from Mars Pet Care, Chester Zoo, a local kennels and Yorkshire Wildlife Park and were tasked with judging the students under three categories, Poster Design, Oral Presentation and Research Bake.

Tom elected to deliver his oral presentation on his dissertation research paper on an Equine stress mitigation device. One of only three students to do so, which scooped him the student nominated award.

When he’s not studying Tom is Chairman of the Equine Society at WCUC and more recently represented WCUC at the National Equine Show, where he could be seen galloping around in full horse costume! Tom added

“I am passionate about changing how the industry manages welfare concerns and I believe preemptive research is crucial to safeguard equestrianism”

 

 

Students from Warwickshire College and University Centre won prizes in 5/6 categories, proudly showcasing student talents across all the category areas.

“We are thrilled to acknowledge the outstanding participation of our WCUC students at the HE Inter-College Dissertation Challenge hosted by Derby College Group on Wednesday, May 22, 2024.

It was a pleasure to see our students engage with external events, witness the impressive research activities of their peers, and recognize the valuable contributions they have made to their respective fields. Our students' hard work and dedication were evident, we are immensely proud of them all for representing WCUC with such distinction”
